SEARCHING FOR A COLLECTIVE CULTURE OF GRIEVING A HOME
In times of crisis, capital reaches out for building materials. This is where it is safe, this is where it can still grow: streets, houses, top floor apartments – everything needs to be built anew. In order to build (something new), what is already there first needs to be destroyed. And those who live and work there to be turned out.
The right to adequate housing is not only the right to have a roof over your head. It is the right to a safe space, a space to retreat, a space where you can recharge your batteries for the next struggle, a space where you can get together without fear. When you lose your home, or your workplace, or the place where you meet your friends, or the place where you feel you are part of society, when your structural and social environment undergoes radical changes, the result can be deep mourning. How do we express grief about a house torn down, about a hut cleared, a caravan driven away, an apartment lost due to forced eviction? How do we say good-bye to a settlement? How and where do we remember our lost neighborhood? Do we have rituals to mourn a building that had to give way for a newly built house?
Immo Grief is a construction site for mourning rituals. Together we will build a home for our ideas and our gatherings, we will watch movies, exhibit, read, eat, and think about loss. For a short period of time, we will build up a headquarters of real estate grief.
